Some of my best work has been in chalk, often on a chalkboard. This has always seemed unfortunate to me, as such works are not particularly durable. Enter: inverted chalk. After making a chalk drawing, I photograph it, invert the image, and voilà–a permanent solution!

Perhaps this is their allure. Whatever the reason, ships have always been a common theme in my art. This series of pencil drawings came into being over recent months–all depicting sailboats, and none in the same emotional state. Sails seem to be the perfect metaphor–the delicacy of man confronting the full force of nature. They also keep our eyes engaged as we look to the horizon.

At an earlier time, I saw ports like these. They have perhaps grown more beautiful with distance, but my mind’s eye is constantly drawn back to the this horizon. Pastel drawing
